Sigurdur (Sam) Magnusson

In 1887, at the age of nine, Sigurdur (Sam) Magnusson (right) immigrated to Canada with his grandmother (Vigdis Gudmundsdottir) and several of his aunts and uncles. His father, Gudmundur Magnusson, had passed on, and his grandmother took him under her care.

Records indicate that he emigrated on the ship Romney.

The man on the left is Bjorn Magnusson (one of Vigdis sons).

Sam was employed by the Lake of the Woods Milling Company in Keewatin, Ontario.

As an aside the Lake of the Woods Milling Company began operations in Keewatin in 1888 and continued until the mill burned down in 1967. The mill was the main industry for Keewatin for all those years. "The mill was known for its fine flour, not bleached, not blended, and was sold all over the world.")

Sam married Gudrun (Runa) Stephens and had several children. His retirement years were spent in Dundas, Hamilton.
